Long walk in the Samariaravinen

Här startade vi.

Långsamt neråt

Vad är detta för blomma?

Övergång vid gamla Samariabyn

På den överfulla båten.

16 km in the Samariaravinen. It was a long walk that took 7,5 hours but it was worth it. The Samaria area is a natural reserve that has been voted the most beatiful area in Europe several times. It is really very beautiful and I recommend it

The route is downhill most of the time so your knees must be alright otherwise you should not do it. Starting from the top at 8 AM the first 4 km is really slow and downhill. After resting in the deserted Samaria village (people lived here until the reserve status was procclaimed in 1962 and after that evacuted to a new village also called Samaria) you are really down and you can walk in a more normal pace. At this point the sides besides you are getting closer an at the most narrow point called Irongate there is 3 meters between.

We where told that we could see wild goats but I only saw the "wild" goat in a fence. It is brown and black on the back. There is also a famous meateating flower called Dracula that I didn t see maybe because the blomming season is over.

The last km was really a small road before coming down to the new Samaria where an overloaded boat took us away. Finaly we went by bus through the long winding road over the mountains back to the north of ths Island and our hotel at 9 PM.

Today I rest my case and my legs.
